They are designed new at higher standard: to match the higher MP sensor and bigger mount called Z. Of course Nikon will ask for much more than the real cost, even though they are easier to design and made in Thailand.

Do Nikon Z lenses work on DSLR?

The Nikon FTZ and FTZ II are lens mount adapters that let us use any F-Mount Nikon SLR or DSLR lens with varying extents of usefulness on Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless cameras.

Do Nikon Z lenses have stabilization? None of the new Nikkor Z lenses are stabilized, because the Z-series cameras come with an IBIS (in-body image stabilization) system that moves the sensor to compensate for camera shake; by contrast, F-mount cameras use lens-based image stabilization. The Z mount’s larger dimensions also come with a downside, though.

I Field Tested that lens, and it’s an excellent professional zoom lens. The Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S lens, also made in Thailand, is similarly fantastic.

Why are Nikkor Z lenses so expensive?

The technology of the optics is superior and for its size very light weight but the construction uses a lot of plastic. Expensive lenses are expensive because they are well constructed, made to last professional use for years, and deliver the very best optically. I used Nikon at work for many years.

For DSLRs, advantages include a wider selection of lenses, generally better optical viewfinders and much better battery life.

Are mirrorless lenses more expensive? Mirrorless lenses are a bit (or a lot) more expensive than DSLR lenses. Of course, it depends on the model, and the difference isn’t always significant.
