The main difference between a prime lens and a zoom lens is of focal length. While prime lenses have a fixed focal length, zoom lenses, on the other hand, have a wider and variable focal length. Prime lenses tend to be smaller, lighter and offer better low light performance than zoom lenses.

Then, Are fixed lenses better than zoom? Canon fixed focal length lenses are usually faster (have a wider aperture) than their zoom counterparts. To me personally, this is the greatest value of a fixed focal length lens. A fast fixed focal length lens allows action-stopping shutter speeds to be used in low-light situations.

Are primes sharper than zooms? Fixed focal length lenses, also known as prime lenses, are some of the best lenses that you can own. In general prime lenses are sharper and perform better generally than zoom lenses at comparable focal lengths.

Keeping this in view, Do I really need a prime lens? Here is your takeaway. Regardless of your photography status or style, a prime lens such as a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 should be part of your go to gear. Remember, there are many different focal lengths to choose from and ultimately, you will have to be the judge on what works for you personally based on what you do.

Should I start with a prime or zoom lens?

If you are very particular about image quality and don’t need to adjust your focal lengths, then prime lenses are the way to go. But if being able to quickly take photos at different focal lengths is more important than having a small camera bag, then zoom lenses are the best option for you.

Examples of NIKKOR prime lenses are the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G and AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G ED VR II, and the new AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G.

What is a prime camera lens?

A prime lens is a fixed focal length lens that doesn’t let you zoom in or out. This focal length is the distance between the point of convergence in the lens to the sensor in your camera. Prime lenses have very wide or large apertures. Apertures measure the size of hole when the lens opens inside a camera.

Can you zoom with a fixed lens? A prime lens is a fixed focal length lens that does not allow you to zoom in or out. In short, the determined focal length of the lens is the distance between the point of convergence in your lens to the sensor or film in your camera. Prime lenses allow a handful of benefits compared to their zoom counterparts.

Can you zoom with a 35mm lens?

On the other hand, most professional-level zoom lenses will have a single maximum aperture throughout the zoom range. Examples of zoom lenses: Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8.

How do you tell if a lens is fast? A fast prime lens would be considered fast when it has a maximum aperture under f/2.8. However, if the lens is 300mm or longer, an aperture of f/2.8 would be considered to be fast and the same goes for zoom lenses.

Should my first lens be prime or zoom?

A prime lens has a fixed focal length, so you have to bring additional lenses of different focal lengths for various shooting ranges. You need to bring just one zoom lens (instead of two to three prime lenses) that covers the full range of focal lengths. The focal length is fixed at one number and cannot be changed.

Which is better zoom lens or prime lens? Prime lenses tend to have better image quality and low light performance yet lack versatility and cost substantially more. Zoom lenses usually don’t perform as well in low light, yet offer a wider focal range and are generally cheaper.
