A virtual machine image (“image”) is a single file that contains a virtual disk that contains a bootable operating system. Images come in several formats. The Rackspace Managed Cloud uses images in the Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) format.

A VM image is a file that contains a virtual disk on which a bootable operating system has been installed.

What is image in Azure? Similar to OS Images, a VM Image is a collection of metadata and pointers to a set of VHDs (one VHD per disk) stored as page blobs in Azure Storage. Right about now, you may be thinking that VM Images and OS Images are comparable.
