The Sigma 24-70mm F2. 8 DG HSM OS Art is a premium workhorse zoom lens designed for the latest high megapixel DSLRs. A constant aperture of 2.8 through the zoom range makes this a highly versatile tool and a brand new Optical Stabilization (OS) system helps compensate for camera shake.

Accordingly, Do Sigma lenses have OSS? And for those interested in a simple yet powerful set-up, we’d recommend giving the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 a try. The 45mm equivalent is a great focal length, and although the lens doesn’t have OSS, in-camera stabilization could help make up for it.

How important is image stabilization in a lens?

The advantage of image stabilization is that it allows you to capture sharper images of stationary objects at shutter speeds slower than you could without it. Lens manufacturers rate their image stabilization by how many stops slower you can shoot using the image stabilization.

What does OS stand for on a Sigma lens? SIGMA’s original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function uses sensors inside the lens to detect any motion, then moves specific lens elements in order to effectively minimize blur caused by such movement.

Should I turn off image stabilization?

Image stabilization is only important if you shoot in low light situations where you need slower shutter speeds. Image stabilisation isn’t for you if you often shoot at 1/500th of a second in lots of light or are mostly on a tripod. You can turn it off in the menu system and save a bit of cash by buying non-IS lenses.

Should I turn off image stabilization when using a tripod?

When you use a tripod, the Image Stabilizer should be turned off to save battery power.

Does image stabilization reduce sharpness? Does Image Stabilisation adversely effect image sharpness? Yes (in theory) it does. But in practice it is very difficult to separate the adverse affect of Image Stabilization when IS is turned ON, because of how much IS favourably affects Image Sharpness by arresting camera movement.

How do I know if my Sigma lens is full-frame? In SIGMA lens naming, “DG” indicates full-frame sensor coverage, and “DN” indicates that the lens is designed specifically and exclusively for mirrorless cameras systems.

What is the difference between DC and DG Sigma lenses?

DC lenses are designed for cameras with an APS-C size sensor and won’t cover the entire image area of a 24x36mm (Full Frame) sensor. DG lenses are designed for cameras with a 24x36mm (Full Frame) sensor but will work equally as well on a camera with an APS-C sensor.

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is not a wide-angle and it doesn’t work on film, FX or full-frame cameras. I tried it, and the corners go black on full-frame. It easily covers 1.6x format Canon and Nikons. It might even cover 1.3x Canons like the 1D series, but I didn’t try it.
