Are handheld GPS obsolete?

Portable GPS navigation devices – like the kind TomTom and Garmin sell – will be obsolete soon. Not only do most smartphones offer this functionality, but a lot of vehicles come with dash-mounted navigation systems right out of the factory.

Similarly, Why are handheld GPS so expensive? A Lot of the stand alone units price is for replicated features. Touchscreens, batteries, gps chips, etc all cost SOME amount of money. While the software is somewhat re-usable you’re essentially paying for a second set of hardware, with less features.
